ABB ALSTOM POWER wins 250 million euro order to build a 540 MW combined cycle power plant in Mexico

ABB ALSTOM POWER has won a turnkey engineering, procurement and construc-tion (EPC) order, worth 250 million euros, for Unit III of the Rosarito power plant, situated 22km south of Tijuana, Mexico. The new unit, scheduled for completion by July 2001, will increase the total output of the plant by 540 MW to around 1,170 MW. The order was placed by Rosarito Power S.A. de C.V., a special-purpose company owned by ABB Energy Ventures and Nissho Iwai, a Japanese trading company. The project is tendered on a build, lease and transfer (BLT) basis by Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). John Gaskell, Managing Director of ABB ALSTOM POWER's Gas Turbine Segment commented 'We are delighted to be playing a part in expanding Mexico's power generation capacity, a vital element in supporting the country's economic growth. ABB ALSTOM POWER will supply two single shaft power trains each composed of one GT24 gas turbine, an associated heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine and electrical generator as well as the overall power plant control system and the balance of plant. The plant will burn natural gas and by utilising ABB ALSTOM POWER sequential combustion technology, will ensure the lowest possible emission levels. This project is based on ABB ALSTOM POWER’s KA24-1 ICSTM power plant concept, one of the most advanced combined-cycle technologies currently available on the market. With sales of around 10 billion euros, ABB ALSTOM POWER is a world leader in the provision of power generation services and equipment. The newly formed company employs 58,000 people worldwide.
